What Are the Different Types of Valves and Their Uses?

Are you looking to improve the function and efficiency of your business?

One way to do this is to improve your equipment by making it more compatible with existing technologies. One important technology is the selection of valves used for different purposes.

Not sure how to differentiate valves? Don’t worry; we’re here to help. Here are the different types of valves and their uses.

Ball Valves

Ball valves are one type of valve, typically used in plumbing, that is designed to open or close a pipeline or other connection. They are widely used in various industries, including petroleum, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, water treatment, and maritime applications.

Ball valves are known for their dependable performance and ease of use. They’re generally operated with a lever or a handle and can be opened and closed quickly and easily with the opening/closure of the main valve.

The most common materials used for ball valves are metal (such as steel, brass, or stainless steel) and plastic. Ball valves are available in various sizes up to hundreds of inches in diameter, depending on your needs.

Butterfly Valves

There are several different types of water shut off valves, each with their own unique uses. Butterfly valves are a type of valve used mainly in the water or wastewater industries.

The butterfly valve uses a disc attached to a spindle that rotates to shut off, divert, regulate or control fluid flow. This provides quick shut off with minimal pressure drop, making it a popular choice for applications involving fluids.

Gate Valves

Gate valves are widely used in industrial, commercial, and residential piping systems, as well as many other applications. These valves are rated based on their ability to withstand pressure and pressure drop, and they are available in a variety of sizes and configurations.

Gate valves are especially useful in applications that require precise control of a fluid’s flow, such as gas systems and irrigation systems. They are also often used as safety valves, isolation valves, and pressure relief valves. It would also be best to consult valve experts if you want to learn more about severe service valves.

Check Valves

Check valves are an important type of valve used for controlling the flow of liquids and gases. They are designed so that the flow is allowed in one direction only. Check valves are commonly used to prevent backflow in systems that involve pressurized fluids and vapors, such as water and gas lines.

There are also different types of check valves. A ball check valve and a disc check valve.

The ball check valve has a ball-shaped element inside which prevents backflow when the flow is directed away from the valve.  The disc check valve includes an embedded disc inside. It works similarly to the ball check valve, while providing a more efficient flow and superior backflow protection.

Learn More About the Different Types of Valves

Valves are subdivided into a variety of categories based on application and structure. Each type has its own distinct use, so it is important to understand the appropriate valve for the specific purpose.

Further research can be done to find out more information about the various types of valves and their uses. With this knowledge, engineers can make informed decisions when selecting a valve for any given application.
